College is a time of great change, both for you as a person and as an academic. But before you come out the other side, you have to do an awful lot of work. Most of this work will be in the form of essays and assignments. But don’t worry, follow our handy guidelines and you’ll get those essays out in no time:
The first thing you want to do to get your essay rolling is to pick the right topic. Your topic should be something interesting, something relevant and something you yourself want to talk about. Everything after that fact will fall into place, but if you pick the wrong topic you’ll end up slogging through. So find the one that best suits you, your style and your interests.
Once you have your topic you need to start brainstorming. Don’t start writing just yet. Instead, take a day to have a good hard think about all the ways you could tackle the question.
Once you have all your brainstorming done, you need to start planning. Find out exactly what way to tackle the question. Which points do you need, which are irrelevant, what way are you going to structure your argument? A plan is the backbone of any good essay and you’ll be able to go back over it as you get stuck during your writing.
When making your plan, try to keep three main points in mind. Three really is the magic number. It’s concise enough to flesh out an essay but short enough that you won’t ramble on. If you can’t think of three good solid points then maybe you need to go back to the drawing board. If you have way more than three, take the time to pick the best ones and discard the rest. There will always be another time to do the rest, but in each essay you should only tackle your three main points.
The best way to keep your focus and energy up is to give yourself little rewards. Tell yourself, if you manage to finish off a paragraph or an idea, or you hit a certain word count by the end of the day, then you can treat yourself to something fun. This way every day you spend writing is a chance to get something cool on the side. So stick to our points, and get writing now.
